For our clients, interiors do more than just provide a place to be. They are a means by which to drive a mission, a brand, an experience. Our design process focuses on building a narrative for our clients. We believe that the story of a space is just as important as the materials and objects that live within it. Thoughtful interiors can serve as a blueprint for life within, and we think deeply about how people will ultimately use our spaces. We spent a day sitting down with members of our Interiors team to discuss how this outlook permeates our process to produce transformative results.

The challenges of opening a new school from the ground up can't be overstated. Thaden School, a new independent middle and high school based in Bentonville, Arkansas, is a private school with a public purpose. The school’s curriculum is unique when compared to more traditional pedagogies and combines academic excellence with learning by doing. The campus is modeled on a small college campus moreso than a monolithic middle or high school building. Students move between buildings over the course of the day. Classrooms spill out into adjacent outdoor areas. Along with the design of the Home Building, the humming heart of the campus, EDR developed a holistic master plan driven by this vision. Completed in collaboration with Marlon Blackwell Architects, Andropogon, and CMTA, the result is a paradigm shift in education—one that seeks new ways to educate our children, while still remaining grounded, contextual, and community-driven. Steve sat down to speak with Clayton Marsh, Founding Head of Thaden, to discuss the inherent challenges, opportunities, and serendipitous surprises that emerge when designers and school leaders work in tandem towards a common goal.
